The New Entrant Learning Initiative is a unique programme that takes place in our school wharepuni 'Taimona".
We aim to prepare our tamariki for the junior classroom by teaching them foundation oral language, literacy, numeracy and independent learning skills.
The tamariki feel at home in their special place, it is cosy and warm and creates a sense of belonging with the small group of children. Taimona allows the children to work in a quiet, peaceful place especially for them. Special toys and resources are kept in Taimona for them to play with and learn from. In 2021 eight children (approx.) will take part in the NELI programme. The boost to their learning is invaluable and sets them up to be successful learners when they enter the junior classroom full time.
Our marvellous kaiako, Whaea Sue provides a positive and caring learning environment for our tamariki to explore this new learning pathway. Through hands-on activities, tamariki are provided with experiences that are able to be transferred into real life.
Large and small motor skills are developed and values are taught so our tamariki can become independent learners in our school.
The children spend the morning in Taimona, then join the main junior school class - Hinengawari - in the afternoons each day.
