At Horohoro School we use the generous contribution of the Ngati Whakaue Education Endowment Trust Board to help implement our New Entrant Learning Initiative – NELI.

NELI is a "play based" and interactive programme based on Te Whariki - The Early Childhood Curriculum, as well as level one of the New Zealand Curriculum. The NELI programme is designed to help transition our tamariki into school life in a fun and friendly way, to develop a love of learning and build confidence in our youngest learners.

We aim to help children;

  • learn that they are already great learners!

  • feel safe and engaged as learners

  • progress to at least age equivalent in oral language

  • learn letters of the alphabet and their sounds

  • learn high frequency words for reading and writing

  • develop foundation reading concepts

  • develop foundation mathematical skills

  • identify and understand numbers 1 to 20

NELI takes place in a setting that is purpose specific. We use a small whare – Taimona, in which the children feel safe and settled.

Whaea Sue is our Kaiako and the tamariki treasure their relationship with her and also with the other children in this small group. The children spend the morning in Taimona, then join the main junior school class - Haparangi - in the afternoons each day.
